Sometimes people come up with a product that you are convinced has been bought off the shelf, this amazingly polished Multi-Monitor LCD Desk Mount is one of those products.  It is constructed using over 72 laser cut stainless steel parts and is welded and bolted together to form the final product.

Slick Multi-Monitor DIY Desk Mount

It allows for a wide range of movement of the LCD monitors and just looks realy slick!  There may be a touch of overkill to the project but if you've got access to the materials then why not!  You can see loads more pictures of the mount on Samms post over at the overclock.net forums.

Hacking

With possibly more hair than skin on show and a classic 80's denim shirt, John Draper aka legendary phone phreak Captain Crunch, gives quite possibly the shortest ever interview on the Computer Chronicles TV show.  Also on the show with him is Neil A Smith, a sleazy looking Attorney with the world's worst comb-over rattling on about hunting down software pirates.

Interesting to see a printed catalogue from the West Coast Computer Connection, an 80's piracy group that was actually selling mail-order pirated software.  The segment ends with an interview with 'Frankie Mouse' showing him downloading cracking tutorials from a BBS.

Simulators

0 Comments - 18.10.11

We have covered next-gen simulators before with the likes of the virtusphere, but this one really does take it to the next level.  The popular UK Channel 5 program 'The Gadget Show' have brought together a team of top design experts and using over £500,000 worth of equipment have created this…..

Its an omni-directional simulator playing a pre release level from the new Battlefield 3 video game, the simulator itself is based on technology created by Swedish company MSE Weibull which allows you to use your own body movement to navigate the game.  This is complemented by a hacked Microsoft Xbox Kinect and a fully immersive 360-degree, 4-metre high, 9-metre wide video dome which was created by Igloo Vision.

There is also a custom ambient LED system which translates the lighting environment seen in the game into real-life lighting effects in the dome.  And as if the fully-immersive experience wasn't enough, there is also 12 Paintball markers which fire at the player so they feel the hits their character is taking.

You can download a full press release about the simulator from youSENDit here and if your in the UK then you can watch the episode featuring it on Monday the 24th of October at 8pm on Channel 5

Coke Machine Hacks

2 Comments - 02.07.11

Vending machines often have a debug mode or service menu, you can get access to this menu by pressing the front panel buttons in a certain sequence.

Coca Cola Vending Machine Debug Menu

The older style Coca-Cola vending machines that you still see everywhere have a standard code of 4 – 2 – 3 – 1.  This is entered using the buttons on the front panel.  The operator can change this code through the menu but it is rare you will find a machine that has been changed.

Once this has been entered you will be in the debug menu, the video below will show you exactly how to enter the code.  It is the same process with a machine with a numeric keypad or a machine with large buttons.  Just take the top button to be number 1, the button below to be number 2 and so on.

Case Modding

Recompute is a PC case constructed completley from recycled cardboard!

Recompute - Sustainable Cardboard PC

Reasonable specs listed below and best of all it comes with Ubuntu installed as standard :)

  • AMD Athlon 3.0Ghz Quad Core
  • 4Gb RAM
  • nVidia GeForce 8200
  • Realtek 6 Channel
  • 500Gb SATA II HDD
  • 400W Power Supply

The way the corrugated cardboard is stacked naturally ventilates the system to prevent things from getting too hot under the hood. For those worried about the fire hazard this type of case prevents, the team lets us know just how safe things are by saying….

During our long-duration stress testing, where we ran the computer at 100% load twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, the maximum heat measured from a single part was (155 F/68C), cooler than a fresh cup of coffee which is about 200 degrees Fahrenheit or 93 degrees Celsius. The ignition point of cardboard is very high, higher than most of the plastics used in traditional computer hardware design. Recompute cases have been tested safe to over 400F/200C. Most of us don't think anything of putting a cardboard pizza box in the oven, or boiling hot coffee in a paper cup, yet the internal components never reach a temperature higher than an oven or boiling liquid.

And as if that wasnt enough, they even go so far as to coat the case with a non-toxic UL-tested flame retardant made by Flame Seal.

The team behind this is working on the designs for the cardboard laptop as we speak!  Keep up to date with all they do by following their twitter feed at http://twitter.com/#!/RECOMPUTE or visit their site at http://www.recomputepc.com
